Happiness

This is my take on ‘Happiness and the Bottom Line’.

  • At the end of the day, everything we do in business or institutions is for people – money in itself has no value – it’s what we exchange it for that is important

  • We need to properly understand the difference between happiness and pleasure – this needs some depth of thought

  • There is lots of guidance about what to do if you’re unhappy – this blog however focusses on gaining a depth of understanding of what happiness is

  • I’m a very firm believer that happy people will deliver a successful business/institution  focussed on long term viability. You can ‘bleed’ a team of people for short term monetary generation, but you can’t do it in a truly long term business model

  • Very few leaders or managers understand what  ‘happy people’ means in the work place – what actions need to be taken at 9 o’clock on a Monday morning

  • The hierarchical approach of needs (Maslow) means it’s a waste of time trying to help somebody reach a higher tier if they haven’t  got a solid foundation upon which build. Classically people in a team need to feel secure and valued by their work community, before they can move up and achieve self confidence and respect within that team.

  • Recruiting people who have been brought up around the ‘kitchen table’ generally means they have had many important life values absorbed into the skin and understand the importance of the ‘love’ element.

  • The recruitment of  young people who have a solid ‘kitchen table’, must then be helped and encouraged to achieve self esteem and respect in their ‘community’, if you want to hold them long term and deliver as part of a happy team. It’s not about the money – that is merely a reflection of the business’s value it ascribes to the individual.

  • Every business/institution needs people with life experience and who are motivated to put something back into their ‘community’ – helping others within the team to gain repsect and self confidence

  • These principle don’t just apply to business – its all ‘communities’ we interact in – family/school/street/village/club etc etc
